Spyware and Virus Information
Updated February 15, 2005

The ongoing proliferation of Spyware and Virus software is becoming more and more of a problem for broadband users and their ISPs. While it is never good for a computer to become infected with a Virus or hi-jacked by Spyware, it makes it even worse for the network and the internet if that infecteded computer is connected to an always-on broadband connection. Current versions of these programs (Spyware and Virus software) tend to try and spread themselves to other computers by sending large amounts of data via the network connection. This sending of data generally happens even before the user is aware that his computer has been infected. Symptoms of an infection often look like everyday computer problems: slow network connection, browser crash, email un-available, email errors, etc. From the ISP's point of view this creates unnecessary support calls, causes undue congestion on the network, overburdens mail servers with unnecessary messages, and generally lowers users' confidence in the network.

RFCnet currently recommends that all users employ safeguards to keep their computers and networks free of illicit software. This can be accomplished by all broadband users employing either software or hardware firewalls and that computers are regularly scanned for all Viruses and Spyware.

The following is a list of resources to help users maintain clean computers. This list is by no means complete and users are encouraged to do their own research.
